HOW DOES MY GARDEN GROW?
by Ed Stone

Last night I thought I heard the bomb fall
But it was only the death rattle of a cricket.
I went out to see if the bomb had damaged
My vegetable garden (the moles have given
Me no peace of mind)-- and I met hundreds
Of black-clad crickets enroute to the cricket
Cemetery. Joining them, I observed the burial
Of their beloved patriarch. Believe me, there
Wasn't a dry eye in the bunch. This morning
I saw three moles wearing black leg bands
Carrying a head of my lettuce out to the
Cricket cemetery. Their concept of flowers.
I won't kill any more moles. I must be
Getting old. Maybe I'm just nervous.
